Bauhaus Spirit: 100 Years of Bauhaus

This is a past event. Monday, May 20 at 7:00pm

NW Film Center/Whitsell Auditorium 1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR, 97205

Directed by Niels Bolbrinker and Thomas Tielsch. Germany, 2018. In German, English and Spanish with English subtitles.

The Bauhaus, a legendary and revolutionary Weimar-era design school founded by architect Walter Gropius in 1919, has been the source of endless fascination since its inception, as the school pioneered innovative teaching methods and, during its first decades, attracted many now-legendary students and faculty including Anni and Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Margarete Heymann, Paul Klee, Marianne Brandt, László Moholy-Nagy and many others. Shuttered in 1933 under Nazi threat, the school has thankfully continued to physically exist operating in fits and starts, but its free and open spirit has had a much greater impact on the art and design world—and thus our materially lived existence—in the intervening years. This playful and entrancing film charts the place of Bauhaus principles in the current moment, ranging from experiments now taking place in Bauhaus-Dessau to architectural innovations in Latin America.
