Annually, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB), a non-profit organization in partnership with other local Tribal organizations hosts an American Indian Day celebration at the Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. This annual American Indian Day is a traditional showcase and celebration of American Indian/Alaska Native cultures and community. Their intent yearly is to raise the level of awareness concerning the challenges that American Indian people face in this country and to celebrate the gift of life with their community. Their organization’s mission is to eliminate health disparities and improve the quality of life of American Indians and Alaska Natives by supporting Northwest Tribes in their delivery of culturally appropriate, high quality healthcare.
This event is a traditional showcase and celebration for all indigenous cultures through cultural dance and regalia, music and food. The promotion of traditional spirit includes respected Northwest Tribal leaders, advocates, drum groups, dancers, arts/crafts/food vendors and community-engaged organizations who share their talents, experiences and outreach with the Portland community. Additionally, Tribal organizations set-up booths displaying health, education, youth and other programs they provide on behalf of Northwest Tribes and the Portland Indigenous community.
