Directed by Dario Argento. Italy, 1975.
A foreboding prediction, strange music, a missing painting, untrustworthy memories: These are some of the major ingredients on which giallo horror master Dario Argento (Suspiria) builds one of his career highlights, Deep Red. When pianist Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) discovers the body of psychic medium Helga Ulmann (Macha Méril) after a particularly brutal murder, he feels compelled to get to the bottom of how it happened. A tantalizing "whodunit," to be sure, but since we're talking about Argento, it's not so much the destination here (or the plot, for that matter) as the journey, and this is one of the director's most sumptuous, nightmarish trips. This crimson-drenched fever dream's soundtrack also finds prog heroes (and frequent Argento co-conspirators) Goblin at their career best, a natural sonic complement to the film's taut, fraught visual atmosphere.
