"It’s a little sad that this American classic by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee — in which a fictionalized version of the Scopes “Monkey” Trial of 1925 stands in for McCarthyism or any threat to factual evidence and free thought — seems to possess an evergreen topicality. But there should be joy at this Lakewood Theatre Company production, which stars two of Oregon’s greatest actors, Allen Nause and Todd Van Voris, with director Antonio Sonera sharpening the show’s contemporary relevance." - Oregon Arts Watch
Directed by Antonio Sonera. By Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee.
Based on the famous Scopes “monkey” trial about a high school educator’s choice to teach evolution in the classroom, Inherit the Wind explores threats to learning and intellectual freedom in a dramatic courtroom retelling. Bertram Cates, based on the real-life John T. Scopes, is charged with teaching evolution to a high school class in Tennessee, where it is prohibited by state law. The impending trial draws two well-known attorneys into town, turning the small-town affair into a nationwide spectacle.
