Oregon Zoo 4001 SW Canyon Rd, Portland, Oregon 97221
Celebrate Penguin Awareness Day at the Oregon Zoo.
Keepers will be available to discuss the Humboldt penguin community that resides at the zoo and educate the community about what small actions humans can take to ensure a better future for penguins and their habitats.
There will be penguin feedings and keeper talks at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Humboldts are one of 17 penguin species in the world, all of which live in the Southern hemisphere. They are classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and in 2010 were granted protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
Humboldts are among the most at-risk species. They depend on predictable food sources near their nesting sites and are threatened by overfishing of their prey species. The seabird guano that Humboldts prefer to nest in is highly valued by humans as fertilizer. Its commercial removal disrupts their breeding.
Join up for Penguin Awareness Day and learn how your consumer choices can help Humboldt penguins.
