Portland Storytellers Guild: What Is Love?

With Valentine’s Day in the offing, Will Hornyak, Janet Liu, Anne Penfound and John Wylder will tell stories that see to answer an age-old question — “What Is Love?” in the Portland Storytellers Guild’s monthly show.

From Irish myths and Russian fairytales to Oregon tales, Mexican fables and beyond, Will Hornyakweaves a wide web of oral traditions into performances and workshops. Will, who teaches storytelling in professional communication at Clark College and performs throughout the U.S., has been featured at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee and numerous regional festivals.

Janet Liuwas born in Taiwan and immigrated to America with her family when she was a child. She has lived with perspectives from two different cultures and shares personal stories to help nurture American understanding of Chinese culture. She is retired and enjoys playing the piano and volunteering in addition to storytelling.

Anne Penfoundenjoys presenting unique interpretations of original stories and multicultural tales to audiences young and old with a quirky British humor and effervescent style. She credits fellow storyteller Will Hornyak for introducing her to the joy of oral storytelling in 1995, setting her off on a journey of delightful discovery.

John Wylderworked for 40 years as a banker, teacher, computer security professional, tour guide, author and international sports judge, He says we can be certain his stories are true if he raises his right hand; if he raises his left hand, we are on your own. He lives in Lake Oswego with the love of his life and their two cats.

In its 33rd year, the Portland Storytellers Guild is the area’s oldest and most inclusive storytelling group with nearly 100 members exploring personal narrative as well as fables, folk tales and stories of times gone by. See the event website for more details.
