Rebecca Reeve: Sun Breathing
This is a past event. Saturday, March 2 at 11:00am 6:00pm
Upfor Gallery 929 N.W. Flanders St., Portland, OR 97209
"British artist Rebecca Reeve's first solo exhibition at Upfor features landscape photographs in which Reeve has painted on areas or sections of the site with vivid colors. Returning to the same sites over and over, Reeve describes “watching the change in seasons and the earth breathe.” The photos are a result of a patient collaboration between the artist and the light, flora, and natural elements of the areas." - Oregon Arts Watch
For her first solo exhibition at Upfor, artist Rebecca Reeve debuts Sun Breathing, a new body of photographs. Historically, she has inserted grid-like objects such as Venetian blinds into scenery as a means to capture, arrange and organize the landscape. Images in Sun Breathing alternate the grid with scenes where elements in the landscape itself are painted in vivid colors. Both kinds of visual intervention confuse sensory perception.
Rebecca Reeve (b. 1973 in London, England) lives and works in New York, N.Y. Landscape, and its complex relationship to humanity, often serves as the foundation of her lush photographic works. Reeve was artist in residence at Stoneleaf Retreat, N.Y. (2018), Joshua Tree National Park, Calif. (2016) and Everglades National Park, Fla. (2013). Numerous publications have featured her work, including Whitewall Magazine, Oxford American, Wall Street International and Lenscratch. Her new work, Sun Breathing, will appear in Aesthetica Magazine’s forthcoming December/January edition. Reeve holds an MVA from the University of Sydney, Australia and BFA from Bath Spa University, U.K.
